Digital assets on a blockchain are controlled by private keys. Who holds those keys determines who can move the assets — and that's the difference between custodial and self-custody services.
Self-custody
With a self-custody wallet, you hold the keys yourself, usually backed up by a recovery phrase. Nobody else can move your assets — but if you lose your keys or phrase, nobody can recover them for you.
Custodial (how Exprodus works)
Exprodus is a custodial platform. Deposited assets are held in wallets that we manage, and your balance is recorded in our ledger. You access your assets through your Exprodus account rather than managing keys yourself.
- Deposits go to a platform-managed address assigned to your account, and are credited after our team verifies them on the blockchain.
- Withdrawals are requested in your account; the amount is held, reviewed by our team and then sent to your address.
- You don't need to store private keys or a recovery phrase — so keeping your account login secure is essential.
